Description:

This Greek Revival home is reflective of it's original 1800's style. Modern accoutrements featured throughout 16 spacious rooms. Barns and outbuildings have been fully renovated.

Situated in the charming hamlet of Alloway, is this historic, classically restored, circa 1832, Greek Revival Country estate on a 4+ acre park-like setting known as "Toganenwood". The property has frontage along the Canandaigua Outlet that is protected by a 900' retaining wall.

The restored 3 story barn (9000 square feet) with an executive office is featured in the book "Barns of Genesee" by Dr. Fink and is surrounded by a restored 2 story corn house, a 2 story carriage barn (totaling 3000 square feet), a brick smoke house and an Eric Sloan inspired covered bridge. Additionally there is a detached 1200 sq. ft. garage with bathroom and kitchen.

The property extends back to the late 18th Century, and in a remote way, to the French Revolution. In 1791, Charles Williamson arrived from Scotland as an agent of Lord Pultney to develop and sell a tract of land, extending from Bath to Lake Ontario.

Henry Towar was his agent for the area south of Lyons, which he named Alloway after his native Alloa, Scotland. Tower was of Huguenot origin, driven out of France by the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Historical records reveal that he was a friend of the dauphin, Louis Phillipe, later king of France, and while Louis was in exile, he stayed at this historically significant estate.

Henry Towar died in 1846 and the farm was sold to Robert Ennis. For more than a century, four generations of the Ennis family, operated a highly successful farming operation. Former Governor Thomas Dewey designated it as one of the "Century Farms of the Empire State". In 1985, the property was purchased by auctioneer, Duane Gansz, who restored the home and barn to its original beauty. He named the estate "Toganenwood", an acronym combining the names of the three families who have owned it and resided in it.

This property is only 5 minutes from the NY State Thruway Exit 42 and is at the gateway to the Fingerlakes Wine & Lake country regions with annual visitors of over 2 million. This property is an excellent opportunity for anyone who is looking for an elegant estate, a premiere B&B/County Inn, Restaurant or Antique Emporium.
